Park Güell

Park Güell is two things: the monumental core with the trencadís bench and the colonnaded halls, paid and slotted by time, and the whole surrounding park of paths and viewpoints, still free.

What's paid and what's not

The monumental heart requires a timed ticket; the outer paths, the woods and several viewpoints are free. If the budget is tight, the exterior alone justifies the climb.

The best hour

First thing in the morning for crowd-free paths and clean light over the city; last hour of afternoon for sunset from the monumental square. Noon is the worst hour in summer.

Getting up without dying

The pedestrian access has escalators from the Carmel neighborhood, and buses circle the hill. From Lesseps or Vallcarca metro, count a ten-minute honest uphill walk.
