La Rambla, with your head on

La Rambla is unavoidable and lovable in its way: trees, newsstands, living statues and the densest human flow in the city. Walked with criteria it's a great stroll; walked naively, a bill.

The right route

From plaça Catalunya to the sea, one calm hour with stops at the Boqueria early, plaça Reial and the Liceu opera house. Columbus' column and the port close the walk.

The classic traps

Restaurants with photo menus at the door, card games on folding tables, crowds with wallets exposed. Don't eat on La Rambla itself: two streets to either side, everything improves and cheapens.

Side streets that save it

The Virreina palace, the Boqueria at opening time and the immediate Raval turn La Rambla from attraction into city. Turn sideways every ten minutes.
