The Ciutadella park

The Ciutadella was modern Barcelona's first great work and remains its living room: the cascade the young Gaudí helped design, the rowing lake, the greenhouse and a science museum aging with dignity.

Fountain and lake

The Verdaguer monument crowns the cascade, and the lake has rented rowboats for over a century. It's the classic plan with children and the classic rest between El Born and the beach.

Around the park

The zoo occupies one flank; the Three Dragons castle and the Hivernacle greenhouse complete the nineteenth-century set. The triumphal arch, five minutes away, is the natural entrance and the obligatory photo.

When to go

Weekday mornings it breathes; Sundays fill with families and drum circles. Any afternoon is good for lying on the grass with the Santa Caterina market as the previous stop.
